Heavy Rains Trigger Red Alert in Spain
(MENAFN) Spain's meteorological agency (Aemet) has issued a red warning for heavy rainfall in eastern regions, urging swift action and public caution. The alert, announced on Sunday, prompted authorities to shut down schools and universities in Valencia on Monday.
The Aemet issued a "high-risk" warning for the provinces of Tarragona, Castellon, and Valencia starting Sunday evening and continuing through Monday.
In response to the severe weather conditions, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez emphasized the importance of adhering to civil protection and emergency service guidelines: "Citizens must always follow civil protection and emergency services instructions."
In addition to the school closures, public spaces like libraries, parks, and markets in Valencia will remain closed on Monday due to the heightened danger.
Residents of Valencia received urgent alerts on their mobile phones Sunday afternoon, notifying them of potential rainfall exceeding 250-300 mm, which could lead to flash floods and river overflows.
This follows a tragic reminder from last year when devastating storms, torrential rain, and flash flooding resulted in at least 232 deaths in eastern Spain.
