Spain Urges Global Support on UN Gaza Vote
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares, speaking to a news agency before the General Assembly's scheduled vote, emphasized the need for countries to condemn “the inhumane blockade that Israel is imposing on the Gaza Strip – a blockade on humanitarian aid, on food, on medicine.”
He urged global unity in opposing a war that, according to him, aims solely to inflict harm, grief, and transform Gaza into “a giant cemetery.”
This proposed resolution, jointly introduced by Spain and Palestine, is a response to what diplomats have described as the UN Security Council’s “inaction” regarding the Palestinian crisis, as reported by a Spanish newspaper.
The measure also advocates for the establishment of a “realistic and viable” Palestinian state that incorporates Gaza, and denounces the unlawful expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, “where violence is being committed daily.”
In a show of diplomatic outreach, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez last month invited Arab nations to work together to ensure the passage of the resolution.
Speaking at the League of Arab States summit in Baghdad, Sanchez declared, “Palestine is bleeding to death before our eyes. In the face of violence and barbarism, only the staunch defense of a world order where justice prevails is possible.”
